Facts about Child Abuse and Neglect

• People who grow up in safe households have less than a 50% chance of smoking than those who  grew up in chaotic and abusive homes.
• An abused child has a 50 % chance of becoming depressed for a substantial period of time each year (non-abused children-14% chance).
• 18% of people who grew up in an abusive home commit suicide.
•Abused children have a 16% chance of becoming addicted to substances (non-abuse children only 3% chance).
• Abused children have 2-3 times more sexual partners and more HIV.
• A sexually abused girl is the highest risk factor for women developing HIV.
